  7. Interplay shuts down Black Isle Studios After months of bad omens, the end has finally come for the veteran RPG developer. It looks like role-playing gamers will have a boulder of coal stuffed in their holiday stockings this year, as GameSpot has received reliable reports that Interplay has shut down Black Isle Studios. While nothing has been confirmed by official sources as of press time, Damien "Puuk" Foletto, a member of BIS' art department, broke the news on the Interplay forums late this afternoon. "Today was my last day at the (former) BIS, as it was for my whole team," he said. To date, Foletto's posts have been one of the most reliable sources of news on the development of Fallout 3 (aka Van Buren) including the departure of his former co-worker J.E. Sawyer. Black Isle's closure is a sad end for the once-great developer. BIS had a hand in some of the most acclaimed PC RPGs of the late 1990s, including the Fallout and Baldur's Gate series. Recently, though, the studio fell on hard times. Its forthcoming Dungeons & Dragons title, code-named "Jefferson," was canned earlier this year, reportedly a casualty of a legal tangle with D&D rights-holders Wizards of the Coast. A host of top-quality talent has fled the studio, including legendary producer Feargus Urqhart. However, it looks like the financial woes of BIS' parent Interplay finally did the developer in. Interplay has lost over $20 million so far this year. Its two main holiday releases, the console RPGs Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II (which was developed by BIS), were pushed back to next January as a result of another legal dispute, this time with distributor VU Games. Interplay's refocusing on console games may have also been a factor in the decision to shutter its more PC-centric subsidiary. Regardless of the reasons, the closure of BIS will hit many gamers hard. Foletto's final post seemed particularly depressing. "I don't know where I'll end up," he said, "but [people should] know that we were all avid gamers and wanted to make the PC games that not only we wanted to play, but also the fans." Alls I can say is: Well Sh**. -Hoth
  8. Lets hope other overpriced technologies drop as well.
  9. Actually, when I went to see Matrix 3: Revulsions, I expected it to be a bad movie. I expected to see forced symbolism, bad acting, and alot of overdone moves. I wanted to see the "over the top" scenes, the bleeding edge special effects. Instead, I saw not just a bad movie, but a movie that somewhat resembles the matrix world. It was the lesser of the series because it had very little of what made the first great. There very little explosive scenes compared to the first two. Plus, why in hell did they continue to push the fact that they had a different woman playing the oracle? We know the original died, which is sad, but they acted as if it were integral to the plot. Plot.....what an odd little word eh? To bad so little of it was used. It came down to one thing folks: Style. The same thing that ruins so many sequels. When style becomes more important than the setting, plot, and characters, you end up with pretty pictures. If that. May the schwarze be with you......... -Hoth

  22. Hanging corpse admired as sculpture Fri 14 November, 2003 18:49 BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Police have removed the corpse of a man believed to have hanged himself at least a year ago after builders and students at Budapest's University of Arts had initially mistaken it for a modern sculpture. The body hung for a whole day in a garden building that had been re-opened for repairs before onlookers realised what it was and called the police, local media said. The building, in campus grounds crowded with different types of sculpture, had been closed five years ago pending reconstruction work. http://www.reuters.co.uk/newsPackageArticl...66&section=news I'll take funky christmas ornaments for 2000$ Alex...........
  23. Shadowbane was Wolfpacks dud. Ubi has managed to release a few decent games despite SB's failure. I watched Matrix: Revulsions, and was only impressed 10 minutes out of the whole movie. Most of which was the costuming in the Frenchman's club. I expect to see more movie to MMORPG deals in the future. These games will be more short term than the previous games, perhaps lasting only a few years. I'm sure after the sudden rush Greek history from upcoming epics like "Troy" and "Alexander", we'll see at least one online game relating to one of those movies.
