  1. Relay for Life Opening Ceremonies and Marathon

On Friday, August 24th at 8:00 p.m. Eastern, you are invited to gather at Brit Castle in front of the fountain for the Opening Ceremonies of the Catskills Relay for Life. Sashes and half aprons will be available for any who need them. A donation for the sashes and aprons would be appreciated but is not required. We have a list of the colors for the different cancer types and your apron/sash will be made to order.

Immediately following the opening ceremonies, there will be a Run for the Cure Marathon sponsored by Mystic Knights (M|K). The entrance fee for the marathon will be 1K with all proceeds going to the Relay for Life, American Cancer Society Fund. Contestants will be gated to the starting line from Brit Castle. Marathon rules are as follows:

    1. All contestants must run on foot.

    2. No animal forms allowed.

    3. No clothing allowed other than your Relay for Life sash/half apron if desired.

  2. What is the Difference Between a Hurricane and a Typhoon

According to the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, a “hurricane” and a “typhoon” are simply different names for a “tropical cyclone.” As a general rule, these cyclones are given the name “hurricane” in the Western hemisphere (the North Atlantic Ocean, the Northeast Pacific Ocean east of the dateline, or the South Pacific Ocean east of 160E), and the term “typhoon” is applied in the Eastern hemisphere (the Northwest Pacific Ocean west of the dateline).

That said, there are even further distinctions throughout the world. The term “severe tropical cyclone” is given in the Southwest Pacific Ocean west of 160E or Southeast Indian Ocean east of 90E. The term “severe cyclonic storm” is given in the North Indian Ocean. And the term “tropical cyclone” is given in the Southwest Indian Ocean.

When the maximum sustained surface winds of a tropical cyclone is less than 39 miles per hour (34 kt, 17 m/s), it is referred to as a “tropical depression.” In the area between this 39 mph (34 kt, 17 m/s) mark and 74 mph (64 kt, 33 m/s), it is known as a “tropical storm.” And then, of course, as it reaches the 74 mph mark (64 kt, 33 m/s), it becomes classified as a hurricane, typhoon, or one of the other names mentioned above.

  3. Top 10 Most Vulnerable Areas to Hurricanes

According to Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, Director of the International Hurricane Research Center, the top 10 most vulnerable areas to hurricanes are:

    1. New Orleans, Louisiana

    2. Lake Okeechobee, Florida

    3. Florida Keys

    4. Coastal Mississippi

    5. Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

    6. Galveston/Houston, Texas

    7. Cape Hatteras, North Carolina

    8. Eastern Long Island, New York

    9. Wilmington, North Carolina

    10. Tampa/St. Petersburg, Florida

While New Orleans would at first seem not to be a surprise, many might think that spots in Florida actually see more hurricane activity. And this, in fact, may be true. But an important point to remember here is that this is a list of the “most vulnerable” spots. Therefore, New Orleans, with its “below sea level” status and its levee system, makes it especially susceptible to flooding and damage when a hurricane actually does hit. And, of course, the world was witness to just what can happen to a city like New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina struck.

In keeping with this theme, Lake Okeechobee, Florida is the only other major area that is protected by levees. And so this is why they get the number two spot. There are approximately 40,000 people living at the base of Hoover Dike in the Lake Okeechobee area – which, according to reports, is leaking.

There were twelve criteria used to determine a location’s vulnerability to a hurricane. Hurricane frequency and intensity, as well as potential levee or dike failure, were the main determinants. Some of the other factors included the potential for freshwater flooding, island breaching history, costal erosion history, the amount of actual residents potentially at risk, the quality and distance of evacuation routes, and the ability of local and state governments and organizations to respond to the damage a hurricane inflicts.

Locations in Florida, as is probably expected, took three out of the top five spots, and then added a fourth at number ten - the Tampa/St. Petersburg area. With coasts on both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mexican Gulf, they are in a unique position of possibly getting hit from different directions.

While a place like Long Island may come as a surprise to many, the area has been actually impacted in the not-so-distant past by Hurricane Donna (1960), Hurricane Gloria (1985), and Hurricane Bob (1991).

  4. owadays, it is hard to find anyone whose life has not been touched by cancer. It crosses all economic, social, gender, religious and race barriers. It affects all Guilds, Alliances and Players in UO.

The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2007, there will be 1,444,920 new cases of cancer reported in the United States. Of this number, 766,860 will affect men and 678,060 will affect women.

Cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death in the US behind heart disease with 559, 650 deaths each year. The Institute of Health estimates that the cost of Cancer in the US each year is $206.3 Billion.

But there is hope. With advances in early diagnosis and treatment, the 5 year relative survival rate for cancers diagnosed between 1996 and 2002 is 66%. This is up from 51% for those diagnosed between 1975 and 1977.

We can do better but we need your help.

Inside the Order of the Dragon Alliance, several brave women have fought their battles with cancer recently. Thankfully, these women have won their fights. However, there are many others in many other families in many guilds and alliances that have lost the battle or are still fighting.

This is why all of the Guilds in the Order of the Dragon Alliance are proud to sponsor Catskills Relay for Life 2007 behind the leadership of Adriana of BoV and Ivy of RKoS.

Each week, beginning August 24th, there will be a fundraising event. On August 24th we will hold the opening ceremonies and kickoff event. Complete details on each week’s event will be posted in advance. There will be a marathon, Fight for Life pvp tourney, peerless hunts, treasure hunts, etc.

There will be an auction on September 21st. Anyone wishing to donate items for the auction can contact a Relay for Life council member listed below. Donations will be accepted through September 14th and all donations will be credited to the person making the donation when the item is auctioned.

The climax will take place on Thursday, September 27th beginning at 7:00 p.m. Eastern with the Relay for Life and Luminaria service followed by a Fel Champ Hunt. The Luminaria will line the path and be left burning through the nite to remind the participants of the incredible importance of your contributions. At the Champ Hunt, all scrolls obtained will be the property of the person who receives them. However, we are asking that all gold be collected for the Cancer Fund.

Since this event is based off the fundraising event for the fight against cancer, there will be sashes or half aprons crafted by Relay for Life available representing every type of Cancer. If you are survivor, a loved one of a survivor, have lost a loved one or a warrior in the battle, you are invited to pick up a sash or half apron designating the type of cancer that touched your life and wear it during the Relay and Spawn. To pick up a sash, please contact any council member. Any donation would be greatly appreciated. Cancer survivors are encouraged to pick up a yellow sash and a half apron designating the color of the cancer you survived.

At the end of the fundraiser, ALL gold raised will be converted to real life cash and the donation sent to the American Cancer Society.

We hope you will all come out and join us as we race for a cure. Maybe one day the “C” word will be no more frightening than the common cold.

    Keep checking for more details.
