Now I don't play WoW but I saw this and thought to myself it was kind of interesting. I'm sure you all you WoWers knew about it but figured it might be an interesting read for other gamers. I think it actually might have been cool for the devs to actually intentionally introduce things like plagues into the virtual environment and not have it happen on accident like this did.
Thursday, 22 September 2005Warcraft Plague Runs Amok
Topic: Games
In a bizarre case of art imitating life, players of the Blizzard Entertainment game World of Warcraft suddenly found themselves dying from a mysteriously rampant plague that ravaged their virtual world.
The plague began innocently enough. Blizzard introduced a new dungeon area in the world, intended to give high-level players a bit of a challenge. But when players reached the boss at the end of the dungeon, they got more than they bargained for -- and unknowingly took a little something back to town to share with their friends. The dungeon boss, called Hakkar the Soulflayer, cast a spell called Corrupted Blood. The powerful spell caused about 280 damage points to anyone it hit, and spread to other members of the attacking party as well. Such powerful spell attacks aren't unusual in the World of Warcraft game world. But what happened next was just plain weird.
When infected adventurers returned to town at the end of their quest, they inadvertently passed along the Corrupted Blood infection to those nearby. In short order, the plague ravaged the population. Soon entire cities fell victim to the artificial disease. And while 280 damage points may be easy for a level-58 Night Elf warrior to contend with, it's enough to kill a lower-level player in seconds.
Game administrators were baffled. As they scrambled to quarantine areas of the game world, the disease quickly spread beyond their control. Partially to blame was the game's "hearthstone" feature, which allows players to essentially teleport from one area to another, and which made it possible for the plague to reach the most distant regions of the map in just minutes.
Eventually the game's administrators came up with a "spell" to cure the plague and managed to distribute it to the players en masse. But the legacy of Corrupted Blood remains. While software viruses are nothing new, Corrupted Blood is unique in that it's the first such infection ever to spread through a virtual environment without being deployed by malicious intent. It was, in a certain sense, naturally occuring in its environment. You might even say it evolved and sought self-propagation, just as any lifeform would do.
In the days since Blizzard eradicated the plague, the company has remained surprisingly quiet about what happened. But you can still find plenty of players willing to talk about it. One 14-year-old Orc told me openly of the incident: "Humans were dying left and right. We just laughed and laughed."

Like OMG How can they make me wait until January to see the outcome of both SG-A and BSG.
Talk about some cool season finales!

What a load of crock.
I second that....
Personally I think some leaders are more detached from reality than a good many gamers I know. But I'm a gamer so I'm probably under the impression I am on a martian planet and little green men come speak to me each and every night where I divulge the secrets of humanity to them.

From the files of "I have way too much money and I need to burn it somehow" comes this bathtub!
I must admit it's kinda interesting but I'm not sure how many of these puppies the makers are going to sell.

One must have a TV first in order to see anything on it. But I must say it was a very impressive show from NBC. All I really need is cookies, makes my world go around
I like ginger snaps

I'm just wondering who had the time to create this, I was hoping it would be easier to find on the internet.
You certainly aren't serious when you ask who created this are you? Well just in case you are here is a little hint.....

No mounts ridden?
That is a bit extreme....
You will not see Thomas there much. Bright sure due to his steed being ethereal but Heph and Thomas never.
Thank you. Though I think the law should say something about mounts in buildings other than ones such as thestables and perhaps military related (in times gone horses actually were ridden into many military buildings).

I wanna be the Fed if you can! That way I can just take everyone elses money and spend it on crap while claiming to have everyones best interest in mind!!
On a more serious note this might be a good idea. There are a lot of young people out there with no clue about fiscal issues. I know I had no clue when I was younger and as I get older I wonder how much of a clue I really have now. *shrugs* Who knows might need to install this just to satisfy my curiosity.

Its a fun show but I don't know how the mainstream public will percieve it. I look forward to seeing more of it. I think they probably made one mistake though....It should be sandwiched in between Las Vegas and Medium rather than preceding both of them.
No, then they would be up against Monday Night Football and all gamers online time slots
You are probably right. It is a pretty cool show I really hope it makes it. I also kinda wish I had seen the 2 hour premier of Threshold cause that looks interesting too. Boy oh boy are people pushing aliens and the unknown this year. I believe ABC even has one coming....Invasion which starts tonight. Now if we can only get Firefly brought back into production!

Thank you Blair.
Now EVERYONE else who has a character in the Legion, PLEASE, respond as she did. It is very helpful for me to know who is in the Legion and active. Right now it looks like our only member is Piper, so please respond as she did.
Thank you.

What the Israeli army thinks of Roleplayers
in Chit-Chat

No they might actually have something, albiet very flawed, and this is what I mean.
Role-players tend to think outside of the box. To seek alternative methods towards even common goals. In the military individualism is not encouraged. You are given an order and you are expected to follow it without question and without any thought as to the potential for a better plan of execution. The flaw in their thinking here is that just because someone thinks outside of the box it does not preclude them to being a good soldier; executing orders exactly as they were given and without question. There is a line between profesionalism and gameplay and I do not believe that the majority of gamers whether it be those into shooters or RPGs would ever think of acting in an unproffesional manner when their life or that of their countrymen is at stake.
