From OSI:
Runic Crafting Tool
By using a Runic Crafting Tool to craft an item, tailors and blacksmiths will be able to craft more powerful artifacts.
Items created using a Runic Hammer or Runic Sewing Kit gain additional bonus properties, generated from the list of magic effects at the top of this document.
The number of properties and their intensities (relative strength of the property) are determined by the type of Runic Tool used. For example, a Valorite Runic Hammer has the chance to add more bonus properties to an item than a Shadow Runic Hammer, and any properties added to the item have a higher average intensity rating.
Unfortunately, this new way of crafting is ill-understood by even the most accomplished crafters, and the results tend to be quite unpredictable. While the crafter is certain to get a better item from crafting with a Runic Hammer, they cannot choose which bonus properties will be applied to the item.
------------------------------------------
I found it here: http://guide.uo.com/itemproperties.html
The Ancient Hammer adds points to your Blacksmithing skill but only while you are holding the hammer. Folks in the trade refer to these as "ASH". The one Rico was given has 10.0 skill bonus points. I believe the highest ASH is a +60.

Balandar and the guys who have started up
a branch of The Honor Empire for the upcoming
World of Warcraft could use some votes for
their clan/website.
Let's do what we can to help them with their
recruiting and community development.
Please take a moment to vote for the
Skullcrusher Orcs.

No worries, sire. Just a lil sibling spat.
Just a lil FAMILY feud.

Hudson,
Our nerves were frayed by the frustrations of the mishaps
encountered during that white wyrm escapade. Your words,
I believe, were fueled by your thrashing emotions, and not
intended to injure.
I, in turn, apologize to those present for simply turning on
my heel and leaving, so great was the offense taken. I am
relieved that we were able to mend our fences once we had
both regained our composure.
Let us mark this as a learning experience and proof positive
of the strength of the bonds of our friendship.

Guardians, there are many treasures
to be found in the guild archives.
I enjoyed this one especially, and
encourage each of you to seek out
these dusty tomes.

Hail, Rusty!
I am glad to hear of the opportunity to lasso you
back, even if it requires a bit of gentle nagging.
Our activity is picking up, that's true. We've been
successful in recruiting some fine new Guardians,
and it would be icing on our cake to be gifted with
the return of our veterans as well.
I very much look forward to meeting you.
Strength and HONOR!

PS. Alright, family --- let's send some brotherly
love to him at ICQ 20540191.

Well, you just waltz on over to your favorite NPC blacksmith and
ask him/her for a Bulk Order Deed. (Click once on them to display
the selection menu.) You will be able to do this once every 6 hours.
Be prepared to toss the lame ones down in disgust; it happens more
often than I care to remember.
The "keepers" can be placed in a BOD book which can be created
by a highly talented scribe. If you don't have one, just holler. I'll
ask Cheyenne to fashion a few books for you.
Tower of Roses has excellent charts of what rewards to expect from
your BODs once you have completed them.
Beware! This can be quite addictive!

I've been searching without success for:
20 exceptional horned leather leggings
This will complete a large BOD with which I hope to
get a barbed runic kit.
I am willing to trade or buy the BOD outright. If you
have it or see it on a vendor, please let me know.
Thank you,
Lady Ulanie

I am thankful that this year I finally joined the ranks of
our guild. The Guardians I have come to know are kind-
hearted, genuine people with a strong sense of integrity
and a fun-loving outlook.
I am thankful that I had the chance to spend a bit
of time with Triston and Cheblis before they left.
Their storytelling talents are superb and I have
learned a lot from them. Both were very generous
with their time and their knowledge. I hope that they
are each finding great enjoyment in their new adventures.
I am thankful to have my fencer gal well trained by Guardian
warriors so that when the BOD systems drive my frustrations
to a fever-pitch, I can find release by grabbing a kryss and
wreaking havoc among the vile creatures of Sosaria.
I am very thankful for the leadership of this guild, past and
present. From the Emperor and Senators on down, all have
exhibited a true concern for everyone's welfare and the
prosperous future of this family.
I am thankful for the new Guardians who enrich our daily
experience, who exert themselves to learn our credo, who
contribute their time and effort alongside their brothers and
sisters to protect the Virtues that founded this guild.
I am thankful that OSI can't seem to fix the housing system
yet because it extends the period of time before Lukkan's
house falls. I am thankful for our military, Lukkan especially.
Please keep them all in your thoughts and remember them
in your prayers.
I am thankful for OSI and the gateway they provide to this
world of possibilities. Even though it's not perfect, even
though there are some aggravating bugs, it remains a good
source of entertainment.
I am thankful for friends and family and for the opportunity
this time of year encourages for recognizing how fortunate
we are.

*dances around the house in happy anticipation*
Some days, it just doesn't take much to get me wound up.
Kudos to the Creators for coming up with some very nice gifts
for us this year. Too bad that Hudson has been so naughty,
though .... sticks, no coal, for him!

Welcome back, Hadrian! I look forward to meeting you.
Tis good news to hear of a Guardian returning to us.
The Kaatya gals stand ready to be of whatever help
we can be to you.

BODS BODS BODS

Good idea, Hudson.
I'd also encourage our crafters to continue
to post their primary BOD searches on these
boards.
I'd be willing to place a Bulletin Board at my home,
Sanctuary, where we could enter and/or remove
our BOD desires, which should provide us with a
more updated record.
My BOD needs are ever-changing. My smith
and tailors pull twice a day, three times if I'm
lucky. And I'm even considering putting craft
skills on a few of my dormant characters to
improve chances of getting useful BODs.
*watches jose pull another normal dagger BOD*
*gives the Skara Brae blacksmith a stern look*
