More on Item Permissions from R31

From the player guide:

You may add other players to your Lot Permissions list as Guests, Kindred, Trustees, or Co-Owners.  Guests can enter your house when the doors are locked. Kindred and above can add items to the lot. Trustees and Co-Owners can can do everything Kindred can, and can also modify the permissions lists for the levels below them. Later releases may add more features to lot permissions.

Per-item permissions now exist for all items on a lot.  By default, all items placed on a lot will be set to Kindred level permissions.  This means that any Kindred or above can modify or take that item.

There are two different ways to change this behavior.

Once an item is placed, you can right click on it to change the permission settings for that single item.

Or, you can open the Item Permissions UI either through right clicking an item and selecting “Permissions Options…”, using the default hotkey Numpad *, or using the Window Selector icon in the top right.

These settings will affect either all new items that you place on the lot, or all items that you place and also all items that you move, based on your ‘When to Apply Settings’ option.  These settings are saved in your local machine preferences like other game options.  If you have a higher permission selected for a category, but do not have that permission on a lot that you are modifying, it will select the highest permission that you do have for that lot.

Here is a breakdown of how the per-item permissions work:

The base “Item Permission”, or “Remove of Modify Item” is the basic permission for a decoration that all decorations have.  If someone meets the criteria, they can either change permissions for that item, move it around, or pick it up completely.  If they do not meet the set criteria, they may still be able to interact with the item in other ways.

Container Add Item: This is the level of permissions required to add an item to a container on a plot.  This permission has an extra level that others do not, which may only be set manually by right-clicking on the item, which is the “Public” level.  This means that a container can be set so that anyone, even with zero lot permissions, may add to it.

Container Modify or Remove:  The permission level required to change items in the container, or remove them completely.

Player Vendor Listing: Permissions required to be able to sell items on a player vendor, or place buy orders.  This can be set so that characters can sell items through a player vendor, but not be able to move or pick up the vendor.

Private Items:  Items can be set as private items for a particular user.  Private items also pay attention to the permission levels that are set on the item, and essentially mean that one level above the set permissions are required to access that item, unless you are the user for whom it is private.  For example, an item set to Kindred permissions and private for a certain user means that no other Kindred can access that item except for the set user, but any Trustee or above could access it.  More examples are if the owner of a lot sets an item private, no one else at all could access the item, but if a Co-Owner sets an item private, the owner of the lot can still access it.

Currently all items on a lot are considered to belong to the owner, regardless of per-item permission settings and will be placed in their bank if the house is changed or lot is unclaimed. This includes items placed by Kindred, Trustees, and Co-Owners.
